NZ Embassy staff member
Brendon
Chetham recently formed the first Rugby
League teams in the Washington-Baltimore region, in response to a
request from the American National Rugby League Team to assist them in
expanding the sport.
They need players, supporters and
volunteers to help them in their inaugural season!

Brendon, CEO of the DC "Slayers"
would like to increase their team membership and supporter base, for
those interested in helping expand this exciting sport. They play during
the summer at present which puts fitness levels to the extreme, but
"that is what League is all about." They already have some excellent
Rugby Players and Touch Players on their team, who want to keep their
fitness levels up during the off-season.
The season is May to September,
and they train currently only once a week, Wednesday
evenings from 5.00pm - dark. The team is split between Baltimore and DC
so he would like to increase both teams for local competitions.
The new team are a mixed base of New
Zealand, Australian and British Embassy staff, and a mix of Baltimore,
Virginia and DC locals. In their inaugural match they upset the
competition straight away by beating last years finalists New Jersey
Sharks, 56-26, then were beaten by
last years winners while they were still hurting, 32-12 to Glen Mill
Bulls of PA. They won their third game 42-22 against Media
MantaRays.

(The American National Rugby League
is the governing body for Rugby League development within the USA and a
member of the Rugby League International Federation.
AMNRL hosted the New Zealand "A"
Squad in Philadelphia in November 2002 and from that match they
had tremendous response to developing Rugby League in new regions).
(Footnote: with good support of
players, volunteers and sponsors, Rugby League could soon earn the kind
of reputation here that we already have for NZ Rugby
Ambassadors Shield). |
