WASHINGTON, D.C. – “Composed Disorder”, paintings by Montreal based New Zealand
artist and architect, Benjamin Rankin.
"I am searching for the fine line of beauty I feel exists, with a sensation of
slightly awkward tension, between balance and imbalance, harmony and discord,
order and disarray."
This series is an obsessive exploration of variations within a system in an
attempt to find beauty. The system is composed of simple forms, which are
repeated in changing positions and orientations. Color is used to define the
forms and their relationships. The resulting compositions are irregular, but
balanced, inviting the viewer to find their own sense of harmony in the works.
Benjamin, who attended school at Wellington Boy’s College and graduated from
Georgetown Day High School in Washington DC, has taken courses in drawing and
painting at the Corcoran and the Washington Studio School. He began to paint
seriously 11 years ago with instruction from Gentile Tondino at McGill
University School of Architecture. He has exhibited individually, and
participated in group shows in Montreal and Washington DC. His works are held in
private collections in Canada, New Zealand, the U.S.A., and the U.K.
